Pin-to-test

Where pins are put to the test!

The Gift of Yarn

I think it’s crazy how fast the end of the year flies by! It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating Halloween, and now we’re three days away from Thanksgiving. Which means Christmas is just around the corner (not trying to stress any of you out or anything!). So instead of Christmas shopping last minute like I seem to do every year, I’ve begun my gift making early.

On a side note, I was approved for my first apartment (yay!) and my sister will be moving in with me. So why not make her a gift that’ll help us decorate our new place?! I found instructions for this cute letter display on Pinterest. It would be perfect for my sister to hang on her door or in her room (fingers crossed she doesn’t see this).

Ingrediants

  • 3 or 4 different colors of yarn
  • fabric glue
  • 2 or 3 decorative flowers
  • wood letter

supplies

1. I began by wrapping the rose colored yarn around the top of the letter. At first I wrapped the yarn without cutting it from the skein, but it became hard to wrap. So instead, I started cutting about a yard’s worth of yarn and cutting it when I was finished wrapping an angle or couldn’t wrap any further. After finishing an area, I would cut the tail of the yarn to where it wasn’t seen and then glue it to the back of the letter.

2. I decided to use more than one color and added light pink and gray to the mix. I split the letter board into thirds. Each color of yarn was applied the same as the rose at the beginning. Some angles may become tricky.

3. After wrapping the entire letter, the ends were left uncovered. So instead of leaving them uncovered, I took twice the length of yarn and glued it to the top to give it the same effect as the rest. It was a little harder because the pieces were so small.

sides

4. After letting the sides dry, I glued a couple of flowers to the top half of the letter to add more decoration. I decided to let it dry for a day to make sure everything was secure before wrapping it. I can’t wait to see what it looks like hung up after Christmas.

Recommendations

I love the way this project turned out, but it did take a long time. I thought it would be pretty simple, like I do with most of my projects, but it was pretty lengthy. I’m sure it would not take as long if the letter wasn’t as rounded, so I would say it depends on the lettering. I also wrapped and re-wrapped certain areas to keep the yarn pulled tight. I give this project a 4 out of 10 on my Expectations vs. Reality Scale because of the time commitment and price of the project.
